  2. Thy Word

  3. Call Upon Me in the Day of Trouble

  4. Would you like to spend some time with this person? What would you ask him? If this magazine had existed in Bible times, Jesus might have made the cover. He was very popular. Not always popular for the right reasons. Sometimes people followed him for physical blessings, like food and healing. But Jesus tells them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”

  5. “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35 What happens to people who come to Jesus, the Bread of Life? What kind of hunger and thirst is Jesus talking about? For what kinds of spiritual “food” do we hunger? How is Jesus himself the bread that feeds us? When do we receive Jesus, the Bread of Life, together with actual bread?

  6. Dearest Jesus, our Bread of Life, Feed our souls through your Word with the eternal food of forgiveness, peace, hope, and joy. Amen

  7. Review What sin had John brought to Herod’s attention? How did Herod feel about John? What did Herod do to John as a present to Herodias’s daughter? What do we do when the law calls us to repentance? Confess Repent Trust Jesus to forgive M MM Messengers Message Motive

  8. How did Jesus show his disciples that they could trust him for all their physical needs?

  9. John 6:1-5 Part 1: What physical need of the people did Jesus recognize?

  10. Why did a crowd follow Jesus? John 6:1-2 (NIV 1984) Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had performed on the sick.

  11. Jesus had shown compassion by teaching the people and healing their sick. What other need did Jesus recognize? John 6:3-5 (NIV 1984) 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Feast was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”

  12. What physical need of the people did Jesus recognize? Key Point 1 Jesus saw that more than five thousand people needed food.

  13. Jesus knows that we need food, just as the people in the story did, and he provides for us—even for the wicked. So why do we pray, “Give us today our daily bread”? Besides food, what other physical needs do we have? God knows that all people need food, and he provides for everyone. Why, then, are some people in the world starving? What, then, is meant by daily bread?

  14. John 6:6-9 What did Jesus want his disciples to do?

  15. What reason does Scripture give for Jesus’s question to Philip? John 6:6 (NIV 1982) 6He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

  16. How did Philip answer Jesus? John 6:7 (NIV 1984) 7 Philip answered him, “Eight months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

  17. How did Andrew’s statement show that the situation seemed impossible? John 6:8-9 (NIV 1984) 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

  18. In whom did Jesus want the disciples to trust? Jesus wanted the disciples to realize that the situation was humanly impossible.

  19. What did Jesus want his disciples to do? Key Point 2 Jesus wanted his disciples to trust in him completely.

  20. Psalm 50:15 (NIV1984) Call upon me in the day of trouble;I will deliver you, and you will honor me.” • What is Jesus’s invitation and promise in this verse? • Name a situation that might occur at home in which you would call upon the Lord to help you. • How might he deliver you? • What is our response to his help? illness An accident Study for a test We honor Jesus because he delivers us from all our troubles.

  21. John 6:10-15 How did Jesus prove to his disciples that they could trust him?

  22. How did Jesus feed more that five thousand people so that they had “as much as they wanted’? John 6:10-11 (NIV 1984) 10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them.11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

  23. When they had finished eating, what did Jesus instruct the disciples to do? John 6:12 (NIV 1984) 12When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”

  24. How much was left over? John 6:13 (NIV 1984) So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

  25. What did the people want to do with Jesus? John 6:14-15 (NIV 1984) 14 After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

  26. How did Jesus prove to his disciples that they could trust him? Key Point 3 Jesus miraculously provided food for the people.

  27. How did Jesus show his disciples that they could trust him for all their physical needs? Jesus saw that more than five thousand people needed food. Jesus wanted his disciples to trust in him completely. Jesus miraculously provided food for the people.
