Suggestions for Creating and Teaching Data Analysis Modules Jill Bouma Berea College
When Creating a Module • Identify objectives (keep fairly simple) • Give explicit directions – go step by step • Ask a student to test it before giving it to class • Provide examples within your module • Break up the pieces – goals, instructions, examples, assignments, etc. • Have students GUESS before actually looking at the data. • (See modules online for examples.)
When Teaching a Module: • Cheerlead – work on confidence as well as competence • Emphasize that numbers “tell a story” • Give lots of examples • Give lots of practice writing – ask them to write descriptions of initial tables and share with partner and read aloud • Give practice presenting, if time .
Teaching Advice • If possible, have students use different data sets (states, years, etc.) • Let students work in pairs/groups • If time, have students present findings • The more practice, the better – writing, reading aloud/sharing, presenting • Give ungraded feedback • More time in class practicing writing = less time grading awful papers
Teaching Advice • Make your own list of rules for tables, interpretations, etc. You’ll start to develop these as you teach and discover common mistakes. • Create ungraded quizzes to catch common problems. • During peer review, read one paragraph from each student. • Ask students for advice for future classes. [This year I will ask students to help create the writing assignment.]
