The BC Securities Commission launched RSS feeds to meet growing demands for timely policy publications and event notifications. With 75% of survey respondents requesting immediate updates, the commission aims to be the best commission website by utilizing XML support and user-friendly features. Key considerations included selecting RSS 2.0, optimizing promotion strategies, and integrating feeds into the website. Future plans involve expanding feed offerings for new investment products and improving subscription services. For inquiries, contact Christina Zeller at 604-899-6737 or czeller@bcsc.bc.ca.

Why did we launch RSS feeds? • Demand for immediate notice of policy publications from 75% of website survey respondents • Demand for immediate notice of events from 60% of respondents • Goal to lead in providing services • Goal to be “best commission website” • Expectation of future demand
What did we consider? • New CMS supports XML • What content to feed • Which button? What colour? • How much information to provide about RSS on the site? • Different feed readers: we tested Bloglines and FeedReader
Technical Considerations • What version of RSS to use: 1.0, 2.0, Atom (we chose 2.0) • Added this code to all pages: • <link href="http://www.bcsc.bc.ca/RSS/rss_events.xml" rel="alternate”> • What tags to use • What to put in each tag • Dublin Core
How did we promote? • Added RSS button to all pages that have content that is in a feed • Created subscription page • Submitted to Feedster, Syndic8 • Picked up by Nooked
Feedback on RSS • Know that dealers requested it • Little response from law firms • Picked up in web analytics, spidered • Some interest from media • Need to create a market because it’s a leading edge technology
BCSC Strategy • Promoting RSS to exchanges, SROs, other regulatory partners • Promoting RSS to law firms, dealers, company associations
Future Plans • Adding RSS feeds for new investment products and investor alerts • Adding email subscription services • Improving existing services
