  1. Lab Activity #1: Measuring the Abiotic Factors of Lake St. George Questions 13 & 14

  2. Question 13 13. What changes in the biotic component of this ecosystem would you expect if nitrate and phosphate levels doubled? Nitrate and Phosphate are key ingredients in fertilizers. The doubling of the two chemicals would encourage Algae Bloom. As Algae has a short life span it would quickly die, and decay. Decaying Algae would reduce the dissolved oxygen concentration in the water. Without sufficient oxygen, plants and fish in the ecosystem would die.

  3. Question 14 14. Which environmental variables that we measured are most important for determining a)where animal lives b)where plants live? a) CO2 plays an important role in the lifestyle of fish. High amounts of CO2 can affect a fish’s central nervous system an cause serious consequences. It affects a fish’s sense by interfering with their hearing and smelling. Fish will most likely evacuate in these conditions.

  4. Question 14 b) Turbidity and CO2 affect where plant growth takes place as they are two crucial variables in determining whether the plants can photosynthesise
