  1. Chapter 15 Design Reuse Learning Objectives: • Understand the Design Reuse concepts • Open AutoCAD DWG files in Autodesk Inventor • Measure Distances and Angles • Reuse 2D AutoCAD files to create a solid model in Autodesk Inventor • Reuse Autodesk Inventor Sketches in AutoCAD

  2. Introduction In parametric modeling, 2D sketches are commonly used in building 3D features. One of the easiest ways to reuse existing 2D AutoCAD data is to open an AutoCAD DWG file directly in Autodesk Inventor, and simply Copy and Paste the desired geometry into a new part model sketch. When copying and pasting the 2D geometry, if the associative dimensions are included in the selection, they will be converted into parametric dimensions. The pasted geometry can then be modified and edited as if it were created in Autodesk Inventor.

  3. Guidelines for opening DWG files in Inventor The AutoCAD Model Space and Layouts are accessible through the Inventor Browser window. The objects that are in Model Space are Read-Only in Autodesk Inventor. By default, the Read-Only Drawing Review Mode is activated when an AutoCAD DWG file is opened. The layouts are displayed as drawing sheets in Autodesk Inventor and can be viewed, plotted and deleted. The objects that are in Layouts can be deleted. New geometry can be added in Layouts, using the Inventor annotation tools and sketching tools. Additional Views and Annotations can be created on an AutoCAD Layout with Inventor sketching tools. The modified file can be saved in Autodesk Inventor, still as an AutoCAD DWG file. The data in the DWG file, either in Model Space or Layouts, are all viewable in Inventor. The Inventor viewing and measuring commands are available for determining distances and angles. The data in the DWG file, either in Model Space or Layouts, can be selected to copy and paste into any types of Inventor sketches in part, assembly and drawing files.
