In practice, asphalt often refers to the processed material and bitumen is one of the raw materials from which asphalt is derived. For clarity, in this article, we will refer to bitumen as the raw material while asphalt is the finished product.

  4. The asphalt pavement that we know is a mix of coarse aggregate stone, sand, fine aggregate and bitumen cement, which is petroleum based. Before it is the asphalt material that is used for paving, it is hot mix bitumen, or warm mix bitumen. There are different types of asphalt mixes according to the temperature used in the asphalt manufacturing plant, and they would result in a different type of asphalt. Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) When we see asphalt being applied on our streets, we would easily assume that it’s hot mix asphalt since they are usually smoking hot. All asphalt is made from bitumen that is heated on the hot mix plant. However, there are varying degrees, which result in different traits and production costs for each type. For the Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), the aggregate materials are blinded in intense heat up to 150 - 180 Celsius and it has to be applied while it is still extremely hot. Because of this requirement, HMA can generally only be laid in warmer months because the cold winter temperatures can cause the base mixture to cool too quickly.

  5. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) Warm asphalt was a blend of the two types, which are the hot mix and the cold mix. The adjustment was made so the asphalt could be laid even in temperate countries during their colder months. Since they are also less heat sensitive, they can be transported long distances without any effect on the product. In countries with four seasons, this is already a popular choice, with almost 30 percent of paving projects using WMA. It has less effect on the environment and worker health because there is less dust and smoke emissions when this asphalt is poured, compared to the hot mix asphalt. Asphalt is considered WMA when it is heated in temperatures between 90 and 120 degrees Celsius. Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA) Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA) is the other extreme of the HMA, and it can be laid down even with thorough heating. CMA is less raw bitumen and mixed with a blend of oils and additives that allows it to be stored and laid down cold. The drawback is that the results are generally not as strong as hot mixed asphalt. The limitations of CMA usage are that they are usually deployed for patchwork, potholes, or for lesser-used surfaces.

  6. Why Hot Mix Asphalt? Why is hot mix asphalt the most commonly used asphalt type for most of the world? These types of asphalt have the innate traits of flexibility, weather resistance and are naturally water repellent. Categories of Hot Mix Asphalt There are actually three categories of HMA: Dense-graded, stone mastic asphalt and open grade mixes. Dense-grade mixes are still divided into two categories according to the sizes of the aggregate used. These include fine-graded and coarse-graded. Fine-graded dense-grade mixes contain a high percentage of sand and small stones. This is the type of mix that is used to pave interstate highways, busy interstates, and highways.

  7. Stone mastic asphalt was designed for improved tire grip on the surface. It was prevalent in Europe and was eventually adopted by more countries to lessen accidents. It is an expensive type since there is a higher percentage of asphalt cement along with asphalt binders and fibers. They are used on large, well-funded projects. Open-graded HMA can be classified as either a friction course or asphalt treated permeable base. Friction course is used to construct the top layer of pavement. It is recommended to have at least 15 percent air voids. Asphalt treated permeable bases, is used specifically for its ability to drain water away from the top layer of pavement. It is used as a base for dense-graded asphalt and concrete surfaces. For more information visit :- https://lintec-linnhoff.com/
