  1. Story board presented by: Aileen Gorman-Leong Lisa Cleary LijieZheng (Novell)

  2. “Almost all creativity involves purposeful play.” -Abraham Maslow

  3. What is creative play? • Creative play is expressed when children use familiar materials in new and unusual ways, and when children engage in role-playing and imaginative play. Making clothes out of papers Making OObleck Playing wedding

  4. How does play build creativity? • Play is a pathway to learning. It arouses curiosity, which leads to discovery and creativity. Vygotskybelieved that play facilitates creativity, and through play children create their own “zone of proximal development”.

  5. We are running a restaurant A group of students use wood blocks to construct a restaurant. They name the restaurant Loco Sushi and design the restaurant manual. They also plan the lay out for the restaurant and create some money for other students to buy food from the restaurant.

  6. Play is NOT an organized activity • Play lies at the core of creativity and innovation (Brown, 2010). • Research has shown that when children believe that an activity is play (rather than work), they perform far better in problem-solving tasks and they show much deeper levels of engagement and motivation (Sheridan, 2011).

  7. It is more fun when the play is not organized . Can you teach me how to play this game? How many colors in the rainbow? Let’s take an adventure

  8. Creative play- Materials should be open-ended • A “good toy” is one that gives all the make-believe power to the child. A good toy is 10 percent toy and 90 percent child. • A toy that has no fixed character or single purpose engages a child’s imagination and creativity, and has the potential to become almost anything.

  9. Materials just need to be right for me to imagine. The carton box makes the best tunnel Kevin & Miles are discussing how to make the marble track run faster. I am dressing up as a King to save my Queen

  10. Creative Play should be multisensory, not technological. • Play is a dynamic, ever-changing process that is multisensory, interactive, creative, and imaginative, whereas Technology encourages passivity and immobility. The playground is the best place for children to explore I learned how to build a shelter

  11. Building an Eiffel Tower Naomi says: “ Let’s build a tower. Kate asks: “ How?” Naomi says: “Kate and I are the bottom of the tower, Jane can stand on our legs and Jessica helps to support Jane from her back.” Jane says: “Let us make an Eiffel Tower!”

  12. Just playing–by Anita Wadley When you see me up to my elbows in paint, Or standing at an easel, or molding
and shaping clay, Please don't let me hear you say, "He is just playing”. For you see, I'm learning as I play. I'm expressing myself and being creative. I may be an artist or an inventor someday.  When you ask me what I've done at school today, and I say, "I Just Played”, Please don't misunderstand me. For you see, I'm learning as I play. I'm learning to enjoy and be successful in my work. I'm preparing for tomorrow. Today, I am a child and my work is play.

  13. “Creativity is contagious. Pass it on.” — Albert Einstein
