  2. Opening Reading Behold, I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even upon your servants, in those days, I will pour out my Spirit. Joel 2:28-29

  3. Opening Responses Lord, touch my lips: that I may sing your praise with all my heart. Spirit of flame, purify me: Spirit of freedom, empower me. Glory to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit: mystery of love, behind, through and beyond all things. I will worship the Lord: all praise to his name.

  4. Prayer of Preparation As I turn my face to you, O God, let my worship be once more a new beginning: cleanse my spirit in your mercy, draw me ever deeper into your love, and accept my offering of praise and prayer on behalf of the world; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Saviour, King and Friend. Amen.

  7. Psalm 148:1-13 Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded and they were created. He established them for ever and ever: he set a law that cannot pass away. 8. Psalm 148:1-13 Mountains and all hills: fruit trees and all cedars. Wild beasts and all cattle: creeping things and birds that fly. Kings of the earth and all peoples: princes and all rulers of the world. Young men and maidens: old men and children. 3 of 4

  10. Prayer Creator Spirit, in the beginning you moved over the face of the waters, and in the fullness of time you filled the apostles with joy. All praise to you, with the Father and the Son, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

  12. Bible Reading On the first day of the week, Jesus came and stood among them saying, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’ John 20:21-22

  13. Confession Holy Spirit, fire of love, consume all that is rotten in me and change me from the inside. Holy Spirit, Comforter, melt all that is cold and hard in me, and soothe my hurts in your warmth. Holy Spirit, transforming power, light up my heart and take possession of me, so that I may become flame.

  14. Responses Breathe in me, Holy Spirit, that I may think what is holy. Move me, Holy Spirit, that I may do what is holy. Attract me, Holy Spirit, that I may love what is holy. Strength me, Holy Spirit, that I may guard what is holy. Guard me, Holy Spirit, that I may keep what is holy.

  15. Prayer Breathe on me, Spirit of Jesus, and help me to be aware of your calm presence throughout my life. Amen.

  17. Bible Reading When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Acts 2:1-4

  18. Reflection The Holy Spirit is like the rising water of the tide, ready to fill every cranny that opens in the reef it engulfs, yet forcing no openings that are not offered. In this way the Spirit of Christ shapes our spirits. When we seek the company of Jesus through prayer and sacrament, and when we put ourselves into the acts and concerns of Jesus, our attitudes become the attitudes of Jesus. These attitudes are the immediate form of the divine life in us. When we allow the love of God to move in us, we can no longer distinguish between our attitudes and his. This is the firstfruit of the Holy Spirit.

  20. Prayer Faithful God, my light, my strength and my salvation: guide me along the way, help me to trust you in times of trouble, and fill me with your Spirit of peace, now and all my days. Amen.

  22. Reflection Whenever we pray as Christians, we do not pray alone. We pray both through Christ and with Christ and inChrist, and Jesus prays for us and with us and inus, so that, through the work of the Holy Spirit, our prayer becomes Christ’s prayer. When the body of Jesus prays, it does not separate its head from itself; so let us therefore recognise both our words in him and his words in us.

  23. Prayers Andrei Rublev, 1425

  24. The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

  25. Collect Father of light, from whom every good gift comes, send your Spirit into our lives with the power of a mighty wind; and by the flame of your wisdom open up the horizons of our minds. Loosen our tongues to sing your praise in words beyond the power of speech, for without your Spirit we could never raise our voices in words of peace or announce the truth that Jesus is Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

  27. Blessing Almighty and all-loving God, through the fire of your Spirit you have drawn the hearts of men and women to share in the mystery of your being; by the power of the same Spirit infuse our lives with your presence, that, as your Son was transfigured in prayer, we too may be transformed, and our lives become a flame of self-giving love. Amen.

  28. Blessing I will bless the Lord, Trinity of love: now and for ever unto ages of ages. Amen.

  29. May you leave this place refreshed and full of God’s peace. If you would like prayer, for yourself or a friend, please make your way up into the chancel. Please stay for refreshments! pentecost
