  1. IEA ECES Annex 27 „Quality Management in Design, Construction and Operation of Borehole Systems“ Proposed by: Manfred Reuss, Bavarian Center for Applied Energy Research, Germany Learn from experiences, don’t make a mistake twice!

  2. We face a fast growth of BTES and BHE for ground source heat pumps (in some countries up to 30,000 systems/a) The field of application covers a wide range family homes – heating or cooling commercial buildings – heating and/or cooling large BTES for seasonal storage of heat (e.g. in solar district heating systems, cogeneration …) Result: increasing number of market players, some with lack of experiences more projects with problems Background 1/3

  3. Background 2/3 regulatory bodies like the water authorities become more and more concerned and restrict their approvals It is important to control and improve the quality in all project phases: design construction operation (maintenance) Remark: Annex 13 covered quality management issues for drilling about 10 years ago. Meanwhile we have a significant development in drilling techniques and new materials 3

  4. Background 3/3 We have now industry in the market which provides different semi-finished products like: prefabricated and tested piping spacers manifolds grouting mixtures of monitored quality special mixers special pumps … 4

  5. Scope and Objectives Describe national design procedures and construction methods for BTES/BHEx for heating and cooling Identify related problems in order to establish further R&D Work out a handbook and guidelines for design and construction Investigate operational failures and work out preventative guidelines for monitoring, maintenance and rehabilitation measures Provide information for regulatory bodies like guideline committees and standardization organizations Provide information for education of drillers 5

  6. Relevant Contributors Each country should form a national team of experts of: scientists consultants approving authorities construction companies, drillers educational institutions … The national teams serve as multipliers to transfer information from and to relevant groups. 6

  7. Topics 1/2 Design process data collection site investigation (TRT,…) geometry of BHEs pipe material selection • proper grouting material type of antifreeze operational aspects (working temperature, pressure, flow rate,…) 7

  8. Topics 2/2 Construction site preparation Drilling prefabricated pipes insertion of piping grouting testing of installation (leakage,…) 8

  9. Topics 3/2 Start-up • functional check Operation • supervision of operation • influence on ground water Problems, failures, investigation and solution • pipe leakage • pipe clogging • problems from poor grouting Environmental assessment micro-sensor for inspection of piping 9

  10. Area of Activities The Annex will be organized in subtasks which are related to the above mentioned topics: Subtask 1: Design Phase Subtask 2: Construction Phase Subtask 3: Operation Phase All relevant groups involved of the participating countries should contribute and share their knowledge 10

  11. Outcome It will be more detailed than regular guidelines! environmental assessment (risk analyses for potential damage) common problems with BHE and BTES detailed analyses and description how to avoid and how solve them best practice handbook 11

  12. Results Periodic documents and interim progress reports achieved within the annex Presentations on national conferences and exhibitions Results will be documented in a handbook for design and construction Results and documentations will be distributed within the national teams to the relevant contributors (scientists, consultants, construction companies, approving authorities, educational institutions,…) Organizing of workshops and conferences preferably in connection with national events 12

  13. Funding Each participating country should at least devote a minimum of 3 man months per year and funding for travelling for the expert Each participating country should provide funding for the national teams to collect and transfer the information and results to the relevant groups The operating agent should devote 6 man months per year to the work in the annex Germany may provide within a proposed research project related to quality management for BTES the Operating Agent 13

  14. Time Frame and Interested Countries Time frame: 3 years Semi-annual experts meetings will be held hosted by the different participating countries Interest was indicated from: China, Italy, Norway, Finland, Canada, Japan, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, USA, Austria potentially interested: Turkey, Belgium, Korea, Sweden, Slovenia, Denmark, France, UK, Newzeland 14
