### Measurement

Unit 1

Mrs. Callender

How do I measure AND WHAT UNITS DO I USE?

LESSON ESSENTIAL QUESTIONCovering pp. 12 and 13 of your book.

The Screw measures 5.1

Missing Units

The Screw measures 5.1 cm

QUANTITY-Something that has magnitude, size, or an amount.

UNIT –

A quantity adopted as a standard of measurement.

What would be a measurement for this volume?

76.0 mL

Most historians agree that Gabriel Mouton, the vicar of St. Paul's Church in Lyons, France, is the "founding father" of the metric system. He proposed a decimal system of measurement in 1670.

1960

Système International

d’Unités or SI

Built on seven base units.

• These prefixes are based on powers of 10. What does this mean?

• From each prefix every “step” is either:

• 10 times larger

or

• 10 times smaller

• For example

• Centimeters are 10 times larger than millimeters

• 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters

• For each “step” to right, you are multiplying by 10

• For example, let’s go from a base unit to centi

1 liter = 10 deciliters = 100 centiliters

• ( 1 x 10 = 10) = (10 x 10 = 100)

• 2 grams = 20 decigrams = 200 centigrams

• (2 x 10 = 20) = (20 x 10 = 200)

• If you move to the left in the diagram, move the decimal to the left.

• If you move to the right in the diagram, move the decimal to the right.

How many g are in 4 Kg?

1 Kg = 103 g therefore 4 Kg = 4 x 103 g

How many mg are in 4 Kg?

1 Kg = 106 mg therefore 4 Kg = 4 x 106 mg

Without using a calculator, convert the following using “think pair share”:

23.5 cg to dag 6. 10 hL to dL

3 mL to hL 7. 27 m to dam

4.25 x 105 KL to cL 8. 0.1 g to hg

65 cg to Kg 9. 0.25 L to KL

6.01 m to cm 10. 1000 cm to hm
