  12. William Penn • October 14, 1644–July 30, 1718 • Quaker • England’s King Charles II gave Penn land • Penn called the land “Sylvania” • King changed it to Pennsylvania to honor William Penn’s father

  14. Benjamin Franklin • January 17, 1706- April 17, 1790 • Famous writer and printer • Famous inventor • Helped draft the Declaration of Independence– one of the Found Fathers of the United States

  16. Betsy Ross • January 1, 1752- January 30, 1836 • Started an upholstery business in Philadelphia • George Washington asked her to make the flag • Probably made the first American Flag
