  2. Rutgers, founded in 1766, is internationally recognized as among the top public research universities in the United States.

Our University • Member of the Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada. • Member of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation effective July 1, 2013, the nation’s premier higher education consortium. • Birthplace of college football and now a member of the Big Ten Conference, one of intercollegiate sports’ most successful undertakings. • Slated to integrate with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the nation’s largest health sciences university, effective July 1, 2013.

Our Programs • Philosophy department ranked #2 in the United States and #3 in the English-speaking world by Philosophical Gourmet. • Women’s history program ranked #1 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. • Ranked #20 in the world for arts and humanities by the Times Higher Education (U.K.) World University Rankings. • Tied for #1 in the nation in number of National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship grants to educate Ph.D. scientists and engineers.

Our Research • Ranked # 1 in the nation for federal funding for research and development expenditures in chemistry. • Ranked #5 in the nation for total funding for research and development expenditures in mathematics and in the social sciences. • Home to the Protein Data Bank, the single worldwide repository for three-dimensional protein structures. • Home to the Rutgers Cell and DNA Repository, the largest of its kind in the world and key to studying genetic diseases.

Our Faculty • 61 Rutgers faculty have achieved membership in the National Academies of science, engineering, and medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. • 35 are elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. • Rutgers ranks fifth in the world for the number of mathematicians in the American Mathematical Society’s inaugural class of fellows.

Our Faculty • In 2013, Joachim Messing, director of Rutgers’ Waksman Institute, won Israel’s Wolf Prize in Agriculture for work that is revolutionizing agricultural research. • In 2012, EndreSzemerédi, professor of computer science, received the Abel Prize from the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters, described as the mathematician’s Nobel Prize. • In 2012, President Barack Obama announced the selection of NihalAltan-Bonnet, assistant professor of biological sciences, to receive a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. • In 2011, Alexander Zamolodchikov, professor of physics, was chosen by an international committee of distinguished scientists as the recipient of the Dirac Medal of the Abdas Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics.

Our Students • 21 students were awarded Fulbright Scholarships in 2012, making Rutgers #11 in the nation among all research universities for number of student Fulbright recipients. • Rutgers’ Newark Campus has been ranked the most diverse in the nation for 16 consecutive years by U.S. News World Report. • Rutgers is ranked #22 in the nation for number of baccalaureate degrees awarded to minority students.

  9. Our Students • In 2012, Rutgers students won several highly competitive awards: • Ertegun Scholarship to study at Oxford University in England • George J. Mitchell Scholarship for study in Ireland • Harry S. Truman Scholarship to study public affairs • Four National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships • Two Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships for excellence in mathematics, science, and engineering.
