  3. 1930’s trial in northern Alabama • A charge of rape made by low class white women again African American men. • The judge went against public sentiment and overturned a guilty jury against the African American men. • The jury did not include any African Americans and overlooked evidence that the woman suffered no injuries. • Attitudes towards Southern women and poor whites complicated the trial. Maycomb is a fictitious county, but based on a combination of towns in the South at this time period. Setting : Maycomb County, Alabama
