  1. Do Now Please Use this time to do good (silent) thinking and writing. Below are the chemical formulas for some common household substances. Carefully look at all three of them. Write down at least four observations about the formulas.

  2. Rules for writing formulas • If there’s not a number next to an element, there’s just one atom of it. ex: H2O has 2 hydrogen atoms, 1 oxygen 2. If there’s a number to the right of an element, multiply it. ex: CO2 has 1 carbon, 2 oxygen atoms • If there’s a number outside of a parentheses, it multiplies everything inside ex: Mg(OH)2 has 1 Mg atom, 2 O atoms, and 2 H atoms

  3. Closing (5 min) • How many different elements are in the formula Mg(OH)2? • How many atoms are in the formula in #1? 3. Draw a clump of atoms that represents this formula.

  4. Closing (5 min) • How many different elements are in the formula Mg(OH)2? 3 of them: Mg, O, and H 2. How many atoms are in the formula in #1? Mg: 1 O: 2 H: 2 (5 total) 3. Draw a clump of atoms that represents this formula.
