  2. Rural transportation • Challenges: • Distances covered • Population spread out • Service more infrequent than urban • Limited paratransit, no DAR • Opportunities • Low income residents • Elderly and disabled • Only some are choice riders • Mobility/TO programs

  4. CASE #1: Low Income Housing • Low income housing unit went in about 2 miles from Hwy 101 • Discussion with SETD occurred, and a new route was planned to service this development. (Near SDS office too.) • Problems: • Poor location from services • Outlier • No agreement in place

  5. Route 15 added

  6. results • Low initial ridership - hourly • Dropped service when finances collapsed in 2011 • No service for 2 years, recently restored • Ridership still low – two hour loops

  7. Case #2: fredmeyers • Word of mouth • Too late for involvement with City • Developer stepped to the plate • Leveraged other grants • Happy ending

  8. Case #3: walmart • Got in early in process • Worked through City Planner • Plans inserted • Developer - full costs • Still waiting…
