Tackling Health Inequalities Those areas of health and wellbeing where the greatest impact can be made on health inequality are: • Reducing smoking • Increasing the proportion of the population that are a healthy weight • Detecting and treating disease earlier, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer • Targeting preventative interventions at those vulnerable groups with the worst health, including those who may be at risk of domestic or sexual violence and abuse • Investing in the health and wellbeing of children and young people • Improving mental health and emotional health and wellbeing, and preventing loneliness • Increasing income levels and employment, and reducing poverty • Improving the quality and warmth of housing • Reducing misuse of substances, including alcohol and drugs • Helping people in their neighbourhoods to live healthier and happier lives. In Mid Devon there is a gap of 10.3years between the LSOA with the longest life expectancy (Silverton, 86.7 years) and the shortest (Tiverton: Upcott Meadow Road area, 76.4 years). In East Devon a gap of 12.5 years between (Exmouth Ashleigh Road area, 89.8 years) and (Honiton Streamers Meadow and King Street,77.3 years).

Mid Devon Public Health Plan PRIORITY ISSUES: • Targeted support to increase physical activity, healthy eating and healthy weight in priority communities • Smoking in routine and manual groups. • Skin cancer prevention. • Alcohol misuse. • Teenage conceptions • Targeted action to prevent road traffic accidents in priority communities.
