  2. History • Emerged in Italy- 16th century • Invented by Andrea Amanti • Commissioned by King Charles IX to create violins • Originally covered with drawings and paintings • Acclaimed Violin Makers • Antonio Stradivari (1644-1737) • Andrea Guarneri (1626-1698)

  3. The Parts Of The Violin <----Scroll Tuning Pegs---> <----Finger Board <---Frog Bow----> <---------Bridge Tip----> “F” Hole-------> Tailpiece------------> <---Chin Rest

  4. How Do I Hold The Violin? • Violin on shoulder • Chin on chin rest • Keep wrist rounded • Elbow under the center of the violin • Avoid resting the wrist on the violin neck • The thumb is opposite the 1st or 2nd finger

  5. How Do I Hold The Bow? • Relax hand, turn wrist to the left, let fingers drop into place • Tip of bent thumb touches frog contact point • Fingers curve over top of bow stick • Middle finger is opposite the thumb.

  6. How Does the Violin Create Sound? • As the bow is drawn across the string, the string vibrates • As the string vibrates, the wood that it is directly touching begins to vibrate also • Instantly, the entire violin vibrates at the same frequency as the string

  7. Members of the String Family • The members have the same body shape • They are each played with a bow • They all have four strings, with each string tuned to a different note * Violin * Viola * Cello * Bass
