  2. DON’T WASTE FOOD

  3. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • Definition: • Belonging to the same period of time. • Of about the same age. • Current; modern.

  4. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • What are the differences between 19th century and 21st century (Engineering)? • Electricity, • Transportation (Automobile, Airplane, etc.), • Food consumption, • Space travel (Aerospace Engineering), • Energy consumption, • Nuclear energy, wind, solar, etc.,

  5. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • What are the differences between 19th century and 21st century (Engineering)? • Environment (global warming, waste management, water management, etc.), • Communication, • Disease, • Consumer electronics products (computer, cell phone, TV, Radio, etc.), • Technology of war machines,

  6. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • What are the differences between 19th century and 21st century (Engineering)? • Material science, • Population, • Genetic Engineering, • Computer tools (Google, internet, software, etc.)

  7. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • Who/what is involved? • Economy ($), • Institutions (Faculty, Students), • Technology, and • Engineering community.

  8. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • Economy ($), • India and China have emerged as strong economic powers due to their steadfast investment in engineering education. Software engineering are their high prioritization of higher education, especially engineering education. India today educates over 260,000 engineers a year, while China graduates more engineering students than any other country in the world. G. Wayne Clough, At the Crossroads: The Future of Engineering Education. Machines Design, July 22, 2004, 42-47, (2004).

  9. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • Major Task for Institutes: • With the fast paced evolution of technology and globalization, engineering education is facing many new challenges in 21st Century. • What are those challenges? • Priorities • Ethics • Coursework • Law • Project management • Safety, Etc.

  10. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • The Engineer Of 2020 Initiative • The National Academy of Engineering Committee on Engineering Education has lunched a two-phase vision-casting initiative, “Engineer of 2020 Initiative”, on engineering in the future and educating engineers to meet the needs of the new era. The initiative first redefined the boundaries of engineering and the composition of the engineering workforce due to changing trends globally, culturally and economically.

  11. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • The Engineer Of 2020 Initiative • It was to develop a shared vision of engineering by the year 2020 and several scenarios were developed to reflect the diversity of the future society. The first phase report was released on May 17, 2004. The second phase is strategic planning for the future of engineering education, which is currently ongoing. National Academy of Engineering, The Engineer of 2020: Visions of Engineering in the New Century, ISBN: 0-309-09162-4 (2004).

  12. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • Diversity • While engineering education and the engineering profession recognize the urgent need to promote diversity, the composition of engineering students and faculty, and in the profession generally, indicates that the goal of diversity has not yet been achieved. This is especially true in the civil and mechanical engineering professions, where the need for more women engineers cannot be overstated.

  13. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • Diversity • For example, the national average of women engineers in the civil engineering is only about 10%. In 2000, 20.5% of bachelor’s degrees in engineering were awarded to women, 5.2% to African- Americans, 0.6% to Native Americans and 6.8% to Hispanics according to National Science Foundation. National Science Foundation, http://www.nsf.gov/sbe/srs/nsf02329/sectb.htm (2000).

  14. Contemporary Issues in Engineering • HOMWEWORK (Due Th. March 8th) • 2 to 5 pages word processed, 1.5 spacing • Introduce the issue. • Discuss how your field of engineering is involved with the issue.

  15. Contemporary Issues in Engineering Some areas of involvement: • Environmental issues • Safety issues • Ethical/Professional issues • Global and Societal issues • Discuss the steps being taken by your engineering field to solve the issue and any future plans. • Conclude with a discussion how you would solve the issue if you were a practicing engineer. • Include a bibliography page. This page is not included in the 5 max pages above.
