  1. Double Digit X Single Digit Multiplication There are 89 jellybeans in each jar. How many jellybeans are there in all? I know that I can use multiplication for this problem because each jar contains an equal amount of jellybeans. Step 1: Multiply the factors in the ones column. 3 x 9 = 27 Place the seven ones in the ones column. Regroup the 2 tens. Place the 2 in the tens column. Step 2:Multiply the factor in the ones column by the factor in the tens column. 3 X 8 = 24 Step 3: Add the 2 groups of ten to the product 24. 24 + 2 = 26 Tens Ones 2 8 9 X 3 2 6 7 You can also break larger numbers down before multiplying.   2. Division with Remainders Some vocabulary that you need to know to help you with division: dividend – A dividend is the total number of items that are being divided. Example: 201 pencils in all divisor - A divisor is the number of items that are in each group. Example: 5 pencilsin each group quotient– A quotient is the answer in a division number sentence. It tells the number of equal groups that the dividend is being broken into. Example: 40 groups of pencils remainder – A remainder is the number of items that are left over or remaining. They are left over because there are not enough of them to make a complete group. Example: One pencilis left over. *Remember each group must have 5 pencils in it, so 4 more pencils are needed to make a complete group. Example: There are 201 pencils that are going to be shared equally by 5 children. How many pencils does each child get? __40 R1 (quotient) (divisor) 5 ) 201 (dividend) - 200 1 Answer:Each child gets 40 pencils. There is 1 extra pencil.

  3. Checking Division with Multiplication *Check your division work with a multiplication number sentence. Let’s use the pencil problem from the previous slide. __40 R1 (quotient) (divisor) 5 ) 201(dividend) - 200 1 We can check to see if 40 R1 is the quotient with a multiplication number sentence. To do this, first take the quotient and multiply it by the divisor. 40 groups of pencils x 5 pencils in each group 200 pencils (product) Then, remember to add the remainder to the product. 200 pencils + 1 pencil 201 pencils Yes! Our answer checks out!
