  1. Common Core State Standards-What are they and what do they mean to me as a parent?

What are Common Core State Standards? • This initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers. • They were created by teachers, parents, education experts and others from across the country. • They provide clear, consistent expectations for what students should be learning at each grade level in order to be preparing for college and career. • They were released in 2010. • Currently 45 states have adopted the standards.

  3. Why Do We Need Common Core Standards? • The Standards assure all students, no matter where they live, will be focused on graduating from high school prepared for postsecondary education and careers.

  4. Other Information about Common Core State Standards • The Standards are only for English Language Arts and Math. South Carolina State standards will continue to be used for Science and Social Studies. • Science, Social Studies and Technical Subjects have reading and writing Common Core State Standards to continue student preparation for college and career readiness.

Words and phrases related to English Language Arts in the Standards Text complexity and growth of comprehension Informational text- text types, responding to reading and research Literacy across the curriculum Reading and writing every single day Logical arguments based on evidence in texts Flexible communication and collaboration

Words and phrases related to Math in the Standards • Standards for Mathematical Practice • Persevering to solve problems • Reasoning ability • Applying mathematical ways of thinking to real- world issues and challenges • Progression of learning • Focus on critical elements for future learning and application • Mathematical modeling

  7. South Carolina, along with the states appearing in green, have joined with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium. In 2014-15, the computer adaptive Common Core assessment will take the place of PASS and other assessments.

  8. What can I do as a parent? • Stay involved • Ask questions • Be willing to adapt • Read with your child(ren) each day • Find ways to relate math to everyday activities • Visit www.corestandards.org
