  1. Pre-MYE Auto-Learning Module 3 of 4 Optional Summary Question

  2. 4 Commandments for Summary • Don’t over-summarise and leave out important details. • Don’t over-interpret, coming up with points that the author did not intend to convey. • Don’t leave out extent and intensity words (e.g. quite, very, barely, relatively). • Paraphrase everything that you possibly can without changing the original meaning.

  3. TRY THIS QUESTION! Passage 1: As for the complaint that the domestic work in one’s own home is unpaid labour, it could be argued that whoever works full-time in the home, the husband or the wife, does not normally have to earn the money to buy food, or clothes, and pay the rent. Even if the rewards at home may not be in the form of a salary, nevertheless the enjoyment of the children, the marriage relationship, the wider network of family and friends, and the respect given by society through intangible rewards, are worth more than money. In today’s society, few people at home need feel estranged from other people or the world about them. Telephone, television, car, common social and educational interests with other parents, all keep married couples in living contact with the rest of the community. If a person feels isolated, it may be that he or she has allowed himself or herself to become so. The person who runs the home is the master of the immediate environment and has the prerogative to freely plan the daily routine to allow for time off, or for reading, or cultural and social activities, much to the envy of the worker in a factory or office. In fact, in the case of a mother, if she uses her time to good effect, she could develop mentally by reading and home study, or enrich herself with the ameliorating experience denied to a working woman: loving daily contact with her children. Raising children is regarded by many people as a rewarding experience and a labour of love. Thus, any housewife who feels a sense of injustice about the traditional occupation of wife, home-builder and mother, might well ask herself whether she is more imprisoned in her role than the working woman is imprisoned in hers, which is to provide food, shelter and financial security and also to contribute to running the home and bringing up children after a hard day’s work. Unfortunately, we have reached a stage of social development where many married people want to have their cake and eat it. They appear to want marriage, home and family and, through them, a firm foothold in society. Yet they resent their role in the partnership and wish to abdicate it. Question 1: 11. From Paragraphs 4-6, the author defends the traditional role of the woman as homemaker and care-giver, and suggests that there are many advantages. Summarize the points made by the author in not more than 120 words, not counting the opening phrase. Use your own words as far as possible. [8m]. [8 marks] Within the next 20 minutes, write your answer – in full sentence form – on a piece of paper. When you are done, check the answer on the next slide.
