  2. Groundwater The water found beneath the surface of the ground, created when surface water leaches down into the earth. Groundwater is usually mixed together with soil and rocks.

  3. Surface water Water standing on the top of ground or soil, waiting either to soak down into the soil or to evaporate.

  4. Water table The point beneath the surface of the ground at which natural ground water is found; The boundary between saturated and unsaturated soils.

  5. Aquifer An underground layer of porous stone, earth, or gravel where water collects.

  6. Permeable Allowing substances (especially liquids) to pass through

  7. Impermeable Not allowing passage, especially of liquids; waterproof Impermeable substance: cement Permeable substance: soil

  8. Leach Penetrate gradually: chemicals that leach into soil can eventually reach groundwater supplies and contaminate them

  9. Porous Something has holes and may be permeable by either air, water, or other substances. A good example of something porous is a sponge.
