warm blooded

Warm-blooded

Warm blooded describes an animal whose body temperature does not change with the outside temperature. It’s body produces the heat it needs.

birds

Birds

Birds are warm-blooded vertebrates with feathers, wings, and two feet. They have beaks instead of teeth.

cold blooded

Cold-blooded

Cold-blooded describes an animal whose body temperature changes with the outside temperature. It needs the sun to warms its blood.

slide10

Fish

Fish are cold-blooded vertebrates that use gills to breathe. Most are covered with scales and have fins to swim.

Lesson 2.2 Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians

Objective: Students will continue their study of vertebrates by classifying some as mammals, reptiles, or amphibians.

classifying animals

Classifying Animals

How is this animal classified and why?

mammals

Mammals

Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrates that have hair. They make milk for their babies. They have lungs to breathe air.

reptiles

Reptiles

Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates that have dry, scaly skin. They have lungs to breathe.

amphibians

Amphibians

Amphibians are cold-blooded vertebrates that have smooth, moist skin. Their bodies change as they grow.

Lesson 2.3 Dogs, Cats, Guinea Pigs

Objective: Students will identify dogs, cats, and guinea pigs as mammals and discuss each animal’s unique design.

Lesson 2.4 Iguanas

Objective: Students will identify five distinguishing characteristics of reptiles and discuss specific features of iguanas.

reptiles1

Reptiles

Reptiles are vertebrates with dry, scaly skin. They use lungs to breathe. They are cold-blooded.
