Learn about the devastating earthquake in Honshu, Japan, with details on crustal movement, tectonic settings, and effects on nuclear power plants. Explore videos capturing the before and after scenes of the disaster.
E N D
Crustal Movement • Ruptured a patch of the earth’s crust 150 miles long and 50 miles across • Moved the island nation eastward by an estimated 8 feet. • Shifted earth’s axis 25 cm • Earth's rotation accelerated by 1.6 microseconds because of the shift in mass caused by the massive quake.
There are 4 major plates all joining at the same place (Pacific, Philippine, Eurasian, North American)
Tectonic Setting • The Pacific Plate is moving to the northwest at a rate of about 83 mm/year . • Japan is located on the North American Plate and is moving towards the pacific plate at a much slower rate. • The Pacific Plate is more dense than the North American Plate and therefore is forced under the North American Plate.
