German Expressionism • German expressionism was more connected to relationships between art and society, politics and popular culture • The Avant-garde artists tried to free themselves of state restrictions • They dreamed of utopian dreams involving individual creativity, but want to reach the general population • The german expressionists were concerned about keeping their individuality while still relating to the masses • The term “Expressionism” in Germany meant “modern art”. There was a rejection of traditional Western conventions dating back to the Renaissance.

Gerhard Richter • He was born in Dresden in 1932. • His work is full of art depicted reality and the actuality of painting • began to work with artists such as Sigmar Polke, Konrad Fischer-Lueg • Together with Polke and Fischer-Lueg, he created a group called the Capitalist Realists. • The Capitalist Realists were satirical, deriving ideas from print media

Johann Sebastian Bach • He was born on March 21st l685 in the town of Eisenach • He was offered the post of violinist in the small chamber orchestra of Duke Johann Ernst • He had high ideals for the church music of Germany, • Began organizing all of the facilities of Mühlhausen • Bach arrived at the small Court of Anhalt-Cöthen and received the rank of Kapellmeister. This was the highest rank given to any musician during the baroque age.
