  4. The Reading consists of 40 questions to be answered in 35 minutes. The Reading skills are divided into five major skills: Vocabulary *** usually the easiest Using vocabulary in context Main Idea Determining a title, central idea, underlining argument Reading Test Details

READING TEST DETAILS continued… • Idea Stated • Who, what, when, where questions directly stated in the text • Infer from Text ***usually most difficult • Determining meaning from ideas not directly stated in the text • Text Development ***usually most difficult • Determining author’s attitude, tone, and the purpose and function of elements of the text

  6. Read the whole sentence and substitute the answer choices for the referenced word. The correct answer choice will make sense. The general strategy is to favor the less commonly used meaning.   7. If something is highly technical or difficult you can always return to the passage later if necessary to clarify your understanding. Example: Look for “locator words” that identify the required information in the passage. This is an “open book” test, you can always return to the passage. Today’s Practice- Vocabulary • Today’s Practice on Vocabulary , it will be only 6 questions. • We will be discussing each answer and why each answer is correct. • Vocabulary Answers • A. fascinated… This means people enjoyed reading it…look at the word ‘appealed’ on line 5. ‘Fascinated’ is the only word that would be correct because of the context. • H. It was very precious... This refers to her diary that her father gave her as a gift, a possession, not the owner of the diary.

B. ordinary… inconspicuous has something to do with the family’s appearance, they were trying not to be noticed by the Germans. • J. unremarkable…nondescript is describing the office building where they lived in hiding. They did not want to live in an unusual or unstable building. • A. They were detained… we already know the family lived in fear and the transition word “unfortunately “is a negative word, so they were caught • G. salvaged…a book has to be published before distributed, Anne died so the book was not completed by her father
