  1. Welcome! English 9

  2. Today’s Agenda • It’s a writing day! • Enriching your writing • 2nd draft, peer review • Polishing your writing Read Write Speak Listen

  3. Enriching your writing • Really consider your topic. Make sure you have a clear main idea. • Consider what you’ve developed so far. • If it doesn’t support your main idea, cut it. • If it does support your main idea, make sure you developed the details. Read Write Speak Listen

  4. Enriching your writing • Really consider your audience. • If you could have anybody in the world read what you’ve written, who would it be? • Be as specific as possible. • As you are writing, try to imagine who your audience would react to what you have to say and how you are saying it. Read Write Speak Listen

  5. Enriching your writing • Characters • Your story probably includes “characters” (at the very least, you). • Use descriptors to show the reader what your characters are like. • Use dialogue to reveal their personality. Read Write Speak Listen

  6. Polishing your writing • Economize – read through what you’ve written an eliminate words that are working for you (I guess, in my opinion, I’m not sure about, I don’t know). Also, prune away writing that is circular or indirect. • Make sure you are using the strongest verbs you can. “He dashed home” communicates more than “He went home.” Read Write Speak Listen

  7. Polishing your writing • Agreement – make sure your sentences agree in number, time, tense, and gender. • Transition – use the list of transition and linking words to move smoothly from one thought to the next. Read Write Speak Listen

  8. Today • If you are not done with your first draft, work on that. • If you are done with your first draft, work on the self-assessment. • If you are done with both, work on your second draft. • If you are done with your second draft, find someone to peer review your paper. Read Write Speak Listen

  9. Homework • Read your choice book • Work on your reading log. • Final draft of your essay is due on Tuesday January 18, 2011. There won’t be more class time to work on the paper. Read Write Speak Listen

  10. Bye! • Come back tomorrow! Read Write Speak Listen
