Maths at keys Meadow Maths Makes Sense Maths Makes Sense (MMS) is a carefully designed maths programme that uses special vocabulary, exaggerated actions and concrete objects like cups to help them become confident mathematicians. To give children the best chance of becoming confident mathematicians, they need repeated practice with basic number skills. They need to know these skills by heart and to be able to use them easily. Maths Makes Sense identifies the key concepts children need to learn to be successful in Maths. These are known as the '10 Big Ideas' - addition, subtraction, equals, multiplication, division, denomination, ratio, infinity, the symbols speak to you and the language tells you the answer. Children are taught these concepts and use them consistently so that understanding grows over time and they are able to apply Maths successfully to real life examples. Further Maths Opportunities Reception • Whole class sessions including direct instruction and guided practice • Additional daily maths opportunities both indoors and outdoors • Building confidence with basic number skills – verbal counting, accurate 1-1, understanding the same, more & less, basic calculations + and -, measurement comparisons, describing and naming flat and solid shapes • Specific vocabulary and exaggerated actions taught • Using maths in real contexts and looking for maths in the environment Key Stage 1 • MMS session each day including direct instruction, guided practise and partner teaching • Daily Practise • Opportunities to use Maths within other areas of the curriculum • Maths Challenges to extend End of Year Expectations and Level descriptions

What can parents do? • With children of all ages there are things parents can do to help ALL children to be the best mathematicians they can be: *Sing number rhymes and reading number stories with young children *Use maths in real situations EG counting out coins for shopping, reading bus numbers, counting stairs up to bed, weighing ingredients for cooking, *Use magnetic/sponge numbers, use sticky shapes to make pictures, construction sets *Play board games and other simple games – dominoes, snap with number cards *Develop children’s confidence with mathematical language by talking about shapes and measurements *Ensure children are secure with basic number knowledge – chanting numbers, 1-1, ordering their numbers, recognise numerals and can write numerals correctly *Support your child with home learning and hand in on time – Maths games *Practise number bonds so children are secure with number pairs *Practise times tables *Play the maths games on the school website *Use the suggested websites
