  2. The course itself • Reading – close reading and literature • Writing – W1 – give thoughts, ideas, opinions, information W2- creative, personal, • Talking –group discussion, individual presentations

  3. the folio • Writing – 1 W1 and 1 W2 • Reading – three critical essays from at least two genres • prose, poetry, drama, media • 2 to 3 sides of A4 should be sufficient to show your skills without boring the marker • All pieces are to be moderated to ensure no hint of plagiarism- all folio pieces to be done in class. • Plagiarism is when you pass off other people’s work as your own

  4. Reading • The Reading examination consists of two papers: General / Credit General / Foundation • Each paper lasts 50 minutes • The grade for your Reading exam is added to the Reading grade you achieve in your folio; the result is divided by 2 and this is your award for the Reading element

  5. Writing • The Writing examination consists of ONE paper only for all candidates. • The paper lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes • Take time to choose, plan and write an essay of 3 to 4 pages • The grade for your Writing exam is added to the Writing grade you achieve in your folio; the result is divided by 2 and this is your award for the Writing element

  6. Talking • Your Talk grade consists of • Group Discussion grade • Added to • Individual Presentation grade • There is no Talking examination • But it is subject to departmental and SQA moderation

  7. The course award • A grade for the folio • A grade for Reading (examination) • A Grade for Writing (examination) • A grade for Talking

  8. The overall grade • Is made up EQUALLY of • Reading • Writing • Talking

  9. For example, • Reading- 2 • Writing - 3 • Talking – 4 • Total = 9 • Divide by 3 • Your final grade is a 3

  10. TUTORS • Offer support and confidence from the one-to-one tuition – where needed. But, they must • Support work being done in class • Help develop skills in Close Reading • Help develop skills in Writing • Help develop skills in Talking • Help develop timing for examinations • They must not do the work for you – otherwise, they are no help at all.
