  1. Purposeful Sampling • Population under study not available • Logic: the sample is statistically representative • Logic: a sample of information-rich cases are studied in depth • Generally used in qualitative research; with small populations

  2. Purposeful Sampling • Not haphazard!! • Criteria for inclusion must be identified before drawing the sample • Researcher must be knowledgeable about the population, the sites, & the conditions of the research • Must have enough variation to develop description

  3. Purposeful Sampling:Comprehensive • The entire population is used as the sample • Used when the population is very small

  4. Purposeful Sampling:Maximum Variation • Subjects exhibit the greatest differ-ences in certain characteristics • Implies compari-son of two groups on one or more characteristics

  5. Purposeful Sampling:Extreme Case • Subjects are selected for their extremity on at least one characteristic • Logic: What is learned from the extreme may be applicable to the typical

  6. Purposeful Sampling:Typical Case • Subjects selected for their “regular-ness” • Criteria would define the “middle of the road”

  7. Purposeful Sampling:Homogeneous • Opposite of maxi-mum variation sampling • Subjects are selec-ted for their simi-larity on a given characteristic
