  1. Borda Count A rank method of voting

  2. How Borda Count works • If there are n candidates in an election, the top choice on a preference list gets n – 1 points, second place gets n – 2 points,…, last place gets 0 points. • The points are totaled for each alternative and the one with the most points wins.

  3. The Infamous Pizza Election!

  4. The total for Pepperoni • The count for Pepperoni is 8(3) + 5(0) + 6(0) + 7(0) = 24 points. • Now your group should calculate the total points for Ham, Veggie and Sausage. • Who wins? What are the totals?

  5. Group DiscussionExercise 1, Activity 5 • Were you satisfied with the results of the vote? If not, why not? • Explain why you think Borda Count is fair or not fair. (Did the group get what they really wanted?) • In what ways does Borda seem better (or worse) than Condorcet?

  6. A surprising result! • Borda count may violate majority rule! A has a majority, but B wins Borda count by 21 – 19 over C, with A getting 18 points and D getting 8 points.
