BURIAL BENEFITS • NON-SERVICE CONNECTED • - 38 CFR 3.1600(b) • Discharged Under Conditions Other Than Dishonorable • A. In receipt of benefits • B. Receiving retired pay in lieu of compensation • C. Pending claim at death resolved in veteran’s favor • D. Properly hospitalized (includes state veteran’s home)
HOW MUCH? • Up to $600 plus transportation • $300 for funeral • $300 for plot • $300 for plot not payable if burial is in state or national cemetery
HOW MUCH? • Transportation payable if vet dies while hospitalized. • Cost includes pick up and removal of body, transportation to funeral home and to cemetery.
HOW/WHO APPLIES • Application form 21-530 must be filed within 2 years of date of burial. • Funeral home is proper claimant if funeral bill not paid in full
BURIAL BENEFITS • Service Connected • 38 CFR 3.1600(a) • Veterans whose deaths are determined to be service connected • May be entitled to DIC and NOT service connected burial allowance • Application - 21-530; No time limit • How much? $2000 plus transportation to national cemetery
DEATH IN SERVICE orWITHIN 120 DAYS • Service Department pays for funeral expenses • Life Insurance - Maximum $4000,000 • Increments of $50,000 • Most veterans purchase maximum • Cost - $28 monthly • Death Gratuity - $100,000 for deaths in service or within 120 days • Family may elect to have private funeral
OTHER DEATH BENEFITS • Burial Flag, one only 21-2008 • Headstone or Marker 40-1330 • Deaths after 11-1-90 may receive marker even if gravesite is marked
