  3. Silent Squares • From the envelope, the table captains will distribute 2 or 3 pieces to each table member (there are 21 pieces in all) • Place the pieces dot side down in front of you and then leave them alone. Park City Mathematics Institute

  4. The group needs to assemble four squares of identical size using all 21 pieces. Except… 1. Speaking, pointing, grunting, or nudging, etc. are prohibited during the course of the activity. 2. It is forbidden to take pieces from other members of the group. 3. It is forbidden to request pieces from other members of the group. 4. Voluntarily giving a required piece to another member of the group, however, is allowed. Park City Mathematics Institute

  5. Silent Squares Activity Think about these questions for a moment by yourself: • What did your group members do to help/hinder progress towards a solution? • What did you do to help/hinder progress towards a solution? • What do you think this exercise was all about? Park City Mathematics Institute

  6. Silent Squares Activity Discuss with your table for 8minutes: • Each person shares one thing that helped and one thing that got into the way. • How might lifting the restrictions change the way the group members approached this task? • How could we use what we learned in this exercise to set the norms for how we will operate in RoP? In our classrooms? Park City Mathematics Institute

  7. Silent Squares Activity How do we translate this activity to norms for RoP? Park City Mathematics Institute

  8. Our Norms for RoP • Pay attention to what other group members need • No one is done until everyone is done Park City Mathematics Institute

  9. Back to the TIMSS video • Australia – 8th Grade Geometry • Hong Kong – from yesterday • Looking at the transcripts Park City Mathematics Institute

  10. At your table…with your transcript • Identify any questions/prompts the teacher poses to students. • Sort the questions. Explain how you decided to sort them. Park City Mathematics Institute

  11. Discussion • What sort of questions seem to engage students into deeper mathematical thinking? • Put your conclusions on chart paper Park City Mathematics Institute

  12. No homework! Park City Mathematics Institute
