Motivated Readers are Good Readers • Pupils become good readers if they read regularly, are motivated, develop good vocabulary and choose to read for leisure • Pupils who are poor readers rarely choose to read, gain limited satisfaction, do not develop vocabulary • Technology plays an important role in providing opportunities for pupils to access a whole range of information, to be inspired, to WANT to read

  3. Learning Objectives • To be aware of freely available resources from the internet using Load2learn website and know how to locate, download and use them

  5. What is it? • A website to provide accessible textbooks, story books and images • Supports dyslexic and visually impaired pupils • Offers a flexible way of supporting learners who struggle to read print.

  6. The history • Grew out of a project and campaign by the RNIB to make textbooks accessible to print disabled users • Until now have been charging a membership free • Recently announced it is to be free to all

  7. What can you do? • Search by title, keyword, ISBN • Can customise pages • Can suggest items for the database • Can contribute items • Can download in different formats Word, PDF, EPUB, MP3, Braille,

  8. How do you access it? • Need to register as a school • Then any number of staff can register and use it.

  9. What are the benefits? • Learners can access text more easily • Allows them to work more independently and quickly • Allows them to have more choice over format • TA’s can be freed up from time consuming preparation. • Helps school s meet the requirements of the Equality Act (2010)

  10. Training and guidance • The website has some very good training videos • Choosing the right format • Storing files • Creating structured documents • Producing images

  11. Hands On • Think of a book and see if it on the L2L site • Find a diagram that would be suitable for the CYP you work with • Look at a training video • Look at the equipment in the Meeting Room
