  1. FOUNDATIONS OF TEACHING TEACHING METAPHORS BY: MONIQUE GRAHAM

  2. MY METAPHOR Teachers are like tour guides. They show students around the appropriate curriculum and guide them through the challenges they may face. The end result however, lies on the students and what they have taken on board during the tour!!

  3. METAPHORS THAT ALSO CAPTURE MEANING Teaching a toddler how to ride a bicycle... In the end, teaching is about guiding someone through his/her applied individual learning experience and the time given to the learner to spend on the bike is more important than the time taken by the instructor to show how well the instructor can ride the bike. Teaching is like painting. Sometimes the subject makes a difference but mostly its the style . A teacher is like a captain of a ship, sailing on unknown waters with students. being together with them in good and bad times, yet more responsible than them, when things do not turn out well. To be a great teacher is to be a great coach--to provide structure and discipline for learning, to set high standards and define them clearly, to model the intellectual curiosity and openness to new ideas that you expect your students to have, and to help students find their own voices, and unique talents, even though they may differ from your own.

  4. METAPHORS EXPLORED! Metaphor is a Greek word, meaning transfer (AJTE, 2011). Metaphors are seen as being able to communicate different ideas through using literal language towards students however this can also be done by using a simile as is has quite a significant resemblance. The word of 'tour' in my metaphor signifies that teachers show students all the skills and tools needed to succeed and learn everything that is necessary in becoming a knowledgeable person.

  5. With the teachers providing all that is needed to the students, the important part relies on the students being able to encapsulate the learning that is put forward to them and using it appropriately to get the best out of their education.

  6. Metaphors are an important section of the learning curriculum. They provide the opportunity for teachers to evaluate student learning and being able to strengthen positive and negative experience had by students throughout their schooling and being able to ensure that each students has an opportunity to express their thoughts freely (AJTE, 2011). Metaphors that are expressed by teachers are normally a fruitful way of understanding thinking in a class environment.

  7. Having teachers start the year with a metaphor gives them the opportunity to produce images of how the classroom will run and use this to help solve any implications that may come forward in the first few weeks of teaching. As the year continues it is most certain that a teachers metaphor will change slightly if not significantly, as the attitudes and skills of students will change as well.
