  8. Translation Memory • A translation memory, or TM, is a database that stores "segments", which can be sentences, paragraphs or sentence-like units (headings, titles or elements in a list) that have previously been translated, in order to aid human translators. The translation memory stores the source text and its corresponding translation in language pairs called “translation units”. (source: Wikipedia)

  9. What does a TM do? Mojadjevojkaimanovicrvenibicikl. Translation Memory My girlfriend has got a new red bicycle. Mojadjevojkaimanovicrnibicikl. My girlfriend has got a new red bicycle. Makes sure that translators need not translate similar or identical sentences more than once.

  10. How does a TM work? Each unit of text in the original and target language is stored in a database (....After it has been confirmed by the translator.) When the translator starts working on a new unit, the software automatically searches for similar units in the database and suggests hits. Similarity is computed on the basis of string comparison (surface level). Usually only hits above a certain threshold will be offered (default 70 %). 100 % = exact match99 – 70 % = fuzzy match< 70 % = no match

  11. How does a TM work? Basic idea: repetition Suitable for certain text types: user manuals, technical descriptions, business reports, legal texts etc. Unsuitable for: literary, newpaper, academic texts etc.
