  5. 材料一 Social practice benefits students in many ways. To begin with, it can enrich students’ experiences and equip them with more knowledge about the society. Secondly, social practice can offer students opportunities to apply what they learn in class into practical work. Thirdly, social practice can bring them some profit, which helps them to be more economically independent of their families. However, some problems arise if students are engaged in too much social practice. For example, some students put so much effort in it that they cannot set aside much time and energy for their study. As a result, their study is neglected, which is an undesirable consequence of social practice. It is important for students to keep the balance between study and social practice. They should keep study in the first place and hold social practice as a supplement(补充). Only in this way can social practice really benefit students.Answer 1

  7. 材料二 Tian Li, son of the reporter’s friend, is a third-year high school student in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province. As neither of his parents is working at Zhengzhou, they sent him to a boarding school(寄宿学校). When the reporter saw the boy, he was dinning at a McDonald’s. His wear showed good taste. Dressed in a blue long-sleeve Addidas shirt, dark blue Nike trousers, and a pair of Nike sandal, he looked very smart. In the conversation, the reporter jokingly called him “an expensive boy”, and the boy flushed(脸红). He said so far in this summer holiday he had spent over 5,000 yuan his parents gave him. When asked how it felt spending so much, he said, “How it feels? Nothing but satisfied. But it’s my parents’ money. Sometimes I feel that’s waste of money, but I just can’t help it.” The boy’s mother is general manager of a company. She told the reporter that she had found the boy spending too much money and tried to stop him. But thinking of her lack of parental care, she always felt sorry for her son. To make up for that, she tried to give him more than enough money without his asking. But she had little expected that, the more she gave him, the more he was spending money like dirt. Seeing the boy waste her hard earned money, she could hardly help feeling hurt.

  8. Answer 2 In the story, the parents give their son money to make up for their lack of care for him. But his wasteful way of spending money makes them upset and hurt.

  9. 材料三 McDonald’s Fast-Food Company is Facing Legal Action The McDonald’s fast-food company is facing legal action by people who say its food made then fat and sick. In New York City, legal action was recently brought against McDonald’s and four other fast-food companies. The lawsuits(诉讼) charge that these companies have not warned people that this kind of food could be harmful. About 170,000 American fast-food restaurants sell food that is high in fat, sugar and calories. They include potatoes cooked in oil and meat sandwiches called hamburgers. The restaurants also serve sweet soft drinks. One man charged that this kind of food damaged his health. He said he had heart attacks and developed the disease diabetes(糖尿病). Several families say their children got fat on fast food and also developed diabetes. One of these teenagers weighs one hundred eighty kilograms. Experts say Americans are now the fattest people in the world. Two years ago, the top government doctor reported an increase in the number of Americans who are too fat. David Satcher said almost sixty percent of American adults weigh too much. Doctor Satcher also said thirteen percent of American children are too fat. He said the fast-food industry, schools and government agencies should change their policies. He said extreme overweight could become the nation’s leading cause of preventable death.
