  1. Year 6 SATs Information Evening 28th January 2019

  2. Welcome • Aims of the evening: • To share important information about KS2 SATs. • To answer any questions about KS2 SATs. • Discuss / share ideas about how you as a parent can help your child at home.

  3. What are KS2 SATs? • Standard Assessment Tests. • All children have to be tested before they go to high school. • Provide assessment information for primary and high schools.

  4. How will Key Stage 2 SATs be marked?The previous national curriculum levelswere scrapped, and since 2016 children have been given scaled scores. You will be given your child’s raw score (the actual number of marks they get), alongside their scaled score and whether they have reached the national average. 

  5. What other information do high schools want? • SATs results. • Teacher assessments. • Tests administered by the high schools. • It varies according to which high school your child is going to.

  6. SCIENCE The Science SAT has been abolished and this will now be assessed through teacher assessment. However, in order to monitor standards the government will send papers to a sample of primary schools. We will not know until nearer May whether we are in this sample.

What does teacher assessment involve, and is it different from testing? • Teacher assessment draws together everything the teacher or teachers know about a child, including observations, marked work and school assessments. • Teacher assessment is not a ‘snapshot’ like tests and is therefore more reliable. If there is a difference between test results and assessment, high schools always discuss with me the true picture.

  9. MATHS Children will sit three papers in maths: • Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes, 40 marks. • Papers 2 and 3: reasoning, 40 minutes per paper with 35 marks available. Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division.  Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including: • Multiple choice. • True or false. • Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart. • Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem.

  10. The children will do a reading paper, which will be externally marked. There will also be a grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary test. The children will be completing writing activities throughout the course of Year 6. This will help the teacher give their judgements of each child’s attainment in writing composition.

  11. SPaG • 2 tests totalling 70 marks. • Spelling – 15 mins – 20 marks. • Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary- 45 mins- 50 marks.

  13. The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test.– 50 marks. There will be a selection of question types, including: • Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’. • Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’. • Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’ • Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’. • Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’ Reading

  14. There are 3 main types of assessment areas on the reading paper: • Text retrieval – answer is there in the text. • Inferential – read between the lines. • Word meaning- give another, similar word for one given in the text.

What are we doing? • Daily focused lessons that are supporting the children's learning, identifying areas where the children need more support. • Daily/ weekly arithmetic sessions. • Intervention sessions for children. • Test preparation by using previous SATs papers to boost confidence. • Daily guided reading sessions. • Vibrant curriculum – cross-curricular teaching. • Teaching assistant support. • Hard work but trying to minimise stress on the children!

  16. How can parents help with reading? Ensure your child reads every night and their reading record is signed! Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction. Try to listen to your child read and ask them questions about the text. Just because they are in year 6 doesn’t mean that they understand what they are reading. Help them with the different skills of reading especially ‘skim’ reading where they are looking for key words in the text. Speed reading. Reading homework- CGP book.

  17. How can parents help with writing? Again, reading a variety of texts – the more children read, the more familiar they become with different text types. Reading homework – text analysis. Writing homework – supporting the BIG WRITE Spelling – spelling lists / rules every week. Grammar and punctuation homework.

  18. How is SATs week organised? • A timetable is issued to school, telling us on which days/sessions tests must be administered. • All children must sit the tests at the same time. • Test papers can only be opened in front of the children. • Tests are completed in the hall, with any displays that may help covered over. • .

  24. Revision Top Tips • Have time off from school work. • Little and often is better than a lot at one time. • Maintain a calm and quiet atmosphere.
