  3. Welcome toCitySHapeRS During this lesson we will be exploring… • Why cities change Image: http://www.123rf.com/photo_7630380_cartoon-city-skyline.html

  4. During our last lesson we learnt that cities can change over time… Dunedin Just like Dunedin and Wellington have over the years… Wellington Images http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/city-history-and-people/3/3/1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PrincesStDunedin.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/nationallibrarynz_commons/3557692081/ http://www.corporatewhorenomore.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

  5. Lets explore some of the reasons why cities may change… But why do cities change?

  6. 1 People moving to the city

  7. People moving to the city The number of people living in a city can grow very quickly over time More people come to a city because there is a better lifestyle here The city begins to grow as more people choose to live in the city Image:http://www.travelpod.com/travel-photo/edwardallin/3/1262114921/people-gathering-for-the-parade.jpg/tpod.html

  8. upwards There are two ways a city can grow… sideways

  9. A city can grow sideways if there is enough land…

  10. Manukau, New Zealand Manukau has almost 400,000 people living here Houses and buildings are spread across because there is enough land Image: http://www.proximityapartments.co.nz/launch/manukau.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manukau_City

  11. A city may have to grow upwards if there is not enough land…

  12. Hong Kong, China Houses and buildings are built very high because there is not enough land Over 7 million live here! There are more people living in this city than people living in New Zealand! Image: http://bernardoh.wordpress.com/2007/06/01/greetings-from-hong-kong/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong

  13. Shanghai, China A place that started with hundreds of people has changed over time into a city with millions of people When Shanghai was first turned into a city there were less than 100,000 people Shanghai is now the 2nd largest city in the world with over 23 million people! Image: http://www.spaceandculture.org/2008/11/02/book-review-chinese-cities-suburban-futures-the-chinese-dream/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai

  14. 2 People leaving the city

  15. People leaving the city The number of people living in a city can become smaller over time More people may leave the city because there are no jobs left They may have to leave because they can not afford the lifestyle they want or the house they live in… Image: http://www.wired.com/autopia/2008/05/few-people-flyi/

  16. Detroit, USA Without work or jobs many people can not afford to live here Image: http://www.preservationwayne.org/blogs/

  17. Detroit, USA With people leaving the city many places are now left empty Image: http://design-crisis.com/?tag=wall-house

  18. Detroit, USA Many people moved here but over time that has changed with many people leaving In 1950 almost 2 million people lived here By 2010 there were only 713, 777 people living here Over 1 million people have left the city since 1950! 19. 3 A natural disaster

  20. A natural disaster A natural disaster can change the appearance of a city in a very short time An earthquake has changed the appearance of Christchurch city The city does not look the same to many people living in Christchurch Image: http://howard-actionscount.blogspot.com/2011/02/summary-of-christchurch-disaster.html

  21. Christchurch, New Zealand Many buildings have been here for over 100 years and will now have to be pulled down as they are no longer safe The earthquake damaged roads, homes and buildings Image: http://lj-longsud.blogspot.com/2011/03/devastation.html

  22. Christchurch, New Zealand Over 200 buildings will be demolished because they are unsafe Over time the appearance of Christchurch city will change as new buildings will replace old and damaged buildings Image: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/christchurch-earthquake/4772045/Christchurch-earthquake-demolition-process-a-train-wreck

  23. ? Christchurch early 1900s Christchurch before the earthquake What will Christchurch look like once it has been rebuilt? Image: http://christchurchcitylibraries.com/heritage/photos/disc7/IMG0086.asp http://www.physicschick.com/pole/index_2005_full.html

  24. As we have seen cities change for different reasons… Lets recap on what we have learnt so far…

  25. So what have we learnt so far? Over time a city can change… • From having thousands of people to having millions of people • And grow sideways (if there is enough land) or upwards (if there is not enough land) • From having many people move to the city, to many people leaving the city • By rebuilding after a natural disaster

  26. We look forward to having you all here Artworks in the exhibition “Rapid Change”at Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts Here is a glimpse of the show you will see during your visit End of lesson
