Warm-up for 09.20.11. Why weren’t lawyers able to become colonists in the new GA Colony? (HINT: pg . 116 under “Georgia’s Charter”) Why do you think it was important to the trustees to have colonists settle their differences outside of court?. Warm-up for 09.20.11.

A: The trustees wanted colonists settle their differences outside of court; lawyers would not help colonists do this.

2. Why do you think it was important to the trustees to have colonists settle their differences outside of court?

Legal proceedings = often drug out over long periods of time

Court rulings can later be challenged  thus keeping problems in a state of limbo without a real, lasting solution.

Fairly popular thought that lawyers thrive off of dissention and fighting, thus trustees wanted colonists to work issues out themselves partly because colonists were too busy with making the colony “work” to fight over matters for very long.
