River terrapins, found primarily in Terengganu, Malaysia, are a vital part of the Southeast Asian ecosystem. These omnivorous creatures feed on molluscs, crustaceans, and fish, reaching sizes up to 60 cm. Their habitat includes the brackish waters of estuaries, influenced by tides. However, human activities pose significant threats, as both the eggs are collected for consumption and sale, and their shells are used in fashion items. With rapid decline, river terrapins may face extinction within the next decade. Conservation efforts are urgently needed to protect these unique turtles.
