  1. KDC Built environment challenge 4M Ermington West Public School

  2. Where it all began • After learning about the water cycle and where water comes from, we began to conduct some experiments on water.

  3. Water walk • As a class we went on a water walk around the school. The things that we looked at around the school were: • The infants toilets • The staffroom • Taps around the school • water tanks around the school • Bubblers • Drains

  4. Water walk discoveries • From this water walk some of the things that we discovered were : • There were leaking taps • The infants toilets are very old and use a lot of water • The infants toilets only have a full flush (no half flush) • There is a water tank that • Some of the bubblers don't turn off properly and leak water • Water in gutters on rooves goes straight down the drain.

  5. Were there any water issues at school that we could detect? • We began to conduct some experiments to look for some issues around the school. • We completed the tapping in experiments in groups. From this experiment we discovered that the taps around our classroom use so much water so quickly. • We measured the area of some of the rooves around the school near the infants toilets and discovered how much rainwater we could capture off the rooves using the average rainfall for the area.

  6. What we found from measuring the rooves In August we could save 32123.52 litres of water.

  7. Generating ideas • In groups we brainstormed some ideas of what we could do to help save water at the school, some of the ideas were:

  8. Rainwater tanks • In groups we learnt about rainwater tanks and shared the information with other class member. In these groups we learnt about the different types of rainwater tanks, different materials, sizes and costs. • We discovered that to receive a $2500 grant from the government our rainwater tank would need to be linked to a toilet block (infants toilets). • The cheapest, easiest to install and a fairly strong tank was the above ground poly/plastic water tank. From our findings about how much water we could collect from the COLA roof a tank bigger than 30000 Litres would be needed.

  9. The design brief • Design using either drawing, modelling or paining designs for a water tank to collect water from the COLA to be used in the Infants toilets. PURPOSE: To save the school water, money and encourage teachers, students, parents and the community to save water. WHY?: Because over 30,000 litres can be collected from the COLA roof every month that just goes straight down the drain otherwise, and to save water in the infants toilets.

  10. The site The site is an unused area of the school that has a straight line of sight to the infants toilets which would make it easy to join the rainwater tank to the COLA roof and the Infants toilet block.

  11. Identifying the design criteria • Some of the things that we needed to consider in designing our solutions were: • Choosing the design model we wanted to undertake • Clearly draft the design • Designs need to show the COLA, Infants toilet block, rainwater tank and any pipes needed.

  12. Modelling designs • The methods that we chose from to design a solution were: • Drawing an artists impression of what the area will look like with the water tank. • In groups making a model of the area using various materials. • Making designs using tin cans that could be painted a water tank if it was installed.

  16. What we have learnt Paula- Use water wisely! Saba- Water is the most precious thing on earth. Zac- Every drop counts, don’t waste water. Jessica- We can save lots of water. Nakita- My body has mostly water in it and you can save money with water tanks. Lachlan, Aeysha, Manal, Mariam, Sina- We can save over 30000 litres of water in August. Elysia- How much water we can save a year on the COLA. Soniyah- Save water with water tanks. Jeffrey- Water is very important, and never to use too much water. Sinead- Turn the tap off when brushing teeth! Matt- Water is one of the most important things. Alya- I learnt how to save water, and to turn taps off. Samuel- Water is precious. Josh- We use the same water again. Princess- How much water you can save. Jessica- Not to waste water.
