  1. SimSONIC A RAY-BASED ULTRASONIC SIMULATOR October 2012 Dhvani Research and Development Solutions Pvt. Ltd IITM Research Park, Taramani, Chennai, India WWW.DHVANI-RESEARCH.COM

  2. What is a Simulator ? • Simulator is a software that provides the user an Interactive Virtual Experience of Reality. • A good Simulator captures the Physical Phenomena using Mathematical Models through Software & Graphics. • Every Simulator balances accuracy with resources and speed.

  3. SimSONIC Applications Spectrum

  4. The SimSONIC Simulator

  5. SimSONIC FEATURES

  6. SimSONIC Advantage

  7. Manipulation of Transducer for Optimum Performance & B-Scan Simulation

  8. Position the Transducer to Focus the Defect

  9. Pitch Catch – Standard Method

  10. Pitch Catch – Tandem Method

  11. Phased Array Simulation – Contact Mode

  12. Simulation with Phased Array in Immersion Mode Welded Fuel Pin 128 Element Phased Array with Received Rays B-Scan Simulation

  13. Simulation with Phased Array on Wedge

  14. Weld Inspection In Simsonic, weld geometry can be defined internally using Pre-defined Objects option. The type of Weld can be selected from the list as shown in the following snap-shot:

  15. Weld Inspection (Contd.) The Weld Geometry is defined using parameters as shown in the diagram

  16. Weld Inspection (Contd.) The video in the next slide shows the A-scan with different wedges at different positions for the above sample. It may be noticed that for the wedges L45, L60 and S30, echo from different regions (front wall, side walls and from the beads) are received and it would be difficult to identify the echo from the defect in the weld. With the wedge S45, the echo from the defect can be seen distinctly and though the ray picture shows some rays received from the sidewall, they are very weak in intensity. Likewise, a right wedge can be selected in SimSonic to detect defects.

  17. Weld Inspection (Contd.)

  18. Weld Inspection (Contd.) For the weld sample with S45 wedge, the echo from the defect are well detected. The A-scan with and without defect are shown below: The A-scan drawn in red color dotted lines is without defect and the A-scan drawn in green color is with the defect.
