Became a big industry and helped define popular music as a separate business When the record was invented  music could be spread easily. “Youth culture” Youth was and still is the main factor
  3. Affecting Allowed people to express their opinions and feelings about something/someone Freedom of speech Way of entertainment
  4. What was it like? 1890s, sheet music was expensive 1900s cheaper way to print music. 25 cents per song sheet 1910 known as the ballroom decade Country music gained some popularity but slowly started to degrade
  5. The Entertainer Late 1800s Scott Joplin created a new form of piano music called rag time Ragtime: from 1897-1918. Main characteristic trait-> “ragged” rhythm
  6. Impact Today “Mozart effect”- music “retrain” the ear. Promoted healing and expansion of the brain Further enhanced technology Music creates changes in metabolism, circulation, blood, volume, pulse, blood pressure, and our moods. Author, Doris Soibelman states that music claims nearly every organ in the body responses to music. Dr. Edward Podolsky states that he has used music t calm his patients.
