  2. Lithuania – Member State of the EU politically, but not energetically • Lithuania is still an energy island: • poorly interconnected with other EU countries • still integrated with the old Soviet system • lacking competitive generation • dependent on one main supplier

  3. Energy security challenges and solutions Challenges: import dependency not diversified supply sources rising demand and energy prices energy affordability not adequately developed energy networks inter-connectors and generation climate change threats 4

  4. Energy security: a complex and multidimensional concept; a coherent multi-policy answer needed. Defense sector: should play a significant role in contributing to energy security objectives; often an innovator to be followed. Energy security challenges and solutions 4

  5. Europe 2020 and Energy Roadmap 2050 Challenge – shift to low carbon economy At the same time offers opportunity to at least partially solve our energy security issues. More sustainable, affordable and secure energy. Mitigate dependency and using energy as a political lever. 5
