  3. What is a Vision? • A vision paints a picture of what we can become. • A vision offers a realistic alternative to a better future. • “This is what we want to be!” • A vision explains to all stakeholders where the school is headed.

  4. What does it look like? • Imaginable • Desirble • Feasible • Focused • Flexible • Communicable

  5. Ask the following… • To what extent is the vision future-oriented? • To what extent is it likely to lead to a better future for the organization? • To what extent does it fit with the organization’s history, culture and values? • To what extent does it set standards of excellence and reflect high ideals? • To what extent does it clarify direction? • To what extent does it inspire enthusiasm and encourage commitment? • Is it ambitious enough?

  6. Activity Rate the following vision statements (E=effective or I-ineffective) using the evaluative questions (previous slide) as the guide.

  10. What are Values in Education? Values are the attitudes and behaviors an organization embraces. • Values endure. They do not leave with the administration. • Values guide the behavior of everyone in the organization.

Don’t Forget to Celebrate! • Define what constitutes success for all! • Tie celebrations to the things that are valued. • Celebrations should be inclusive for all. • Communicate…Communicate…Communicate • Celebrations should be widely accessible. • Celebrations should be both formal and informal. • Don’t use celebrations to compare high/low achieving staff. Focus on results. • Be specific about the nature of the success. • Use stories and be human!
