  5. Islam • Islam– Submission • Muslim– one who submits • There are currently 1.2 billion Muslims world wide • Predominantly in North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. • 90% are Sunni

Muhammad • Born in AD 570 • In Mecca • To a poor family • Was a merchant by trade • In AD 610 he was meditating and fasting in a cave when he was suddenly visited by the angel Gabriel. • Gabriel commanded him to recite but Muhammad could not, finally he was forced to recite by a supernatural force • This was the beginning of the Quran • This experience was so traumatizing for Muhammad that he believed that he had been demon possessed. • His senior wife encouraged him to continue with these encounters. • After this Muhammad began his career as the chosen prophet of Allah.

Muhammad (Continued) • The years that followed were full of persecution. • In AD 621 Gabriel toke Muhammad on a magical journey to Jerusalem and Heaven. • In AD 622 he made his Hijrah Journey. • This is the marking of time and the new year for Muslims. • He cleared Mecca and removed all the idols and dedicated it to Allah. • Died in AD 632 • After his death their arose a power struggle for leadership of the religion • From this developed the Suni and the Shiites
