Objectives • What is it? Why would I use it to connect with my students? How do I use it at Ivy Tech? • Wiki • Blog • IM • iPods, MP3s, and other media • Streaming Media • Social Networks
Wiki Streamed live from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dnL00TdmLY
Wiki – why use it? • Group projects • Better publishing options than the discussion board or a word document • Ability for students to make comments • Building a collective “library” • Carries over from one semester to the next when you copy your course
How do I use it at Ivy Tech? • Within Blackboard – Teams LX • Great built-in assessment features • Full revision history • Can be exported and placed on another web site • Other wiki products • Twiki (available at Ivy Tech for admin use)
Blog Streamed live from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN2I1pWXjXI
Blog – why use it? • Student journaling • Faculty “journaling” - Announcements that can be directed to an RSS reader • Ongoing team reporting • A new format for discussion • Allows richer editing • Is more challenging to “assess”
Blogs – How do I use it at Ivy Tech? • Within Blackboard – Journals LX • Choose the configuration options right for your particular application • Grading is more challenging than with discussions • Outside of Blackboard • No other College option is currently available
Instant Messaging – IM’ing • Instant messaging is “like an email, but live” (NCIS, Season 2, Red Cell). Stream available at: https://media.ivytech.edu/Gallery/Sqrt4qjyRYIGpk0P
Instant Messaging – Why Use It? • Connect with other faculty and staff, in your region and beyond • Help students connect with one another • Better connect with your students by holding regular “office hours” • Focus student communications to times during your “office hours” • Our IM tool has some great additional tools as a part of it – voice, video, and application sharing with more coming soon.
IM – How do I use it at Ivy Tech? • Pronto • Register once • Classes are automatically linked up • Add your Pronto ID to your signature in emails to let others link up with you. • Guide to Pronto is on the Click for Help tab • Check out training from the Center for Instructional Technology
iPods, MP3s, and other media • Make content that students can take with them or use when they want. • Lots of tools can be used to create these things free or for very little cost:
Streaming Media • Build your own and post to media.ivytech.edu • Stream from YouTube, TeacherTube, etc. • Get from other sources (search google for topic and video; look at textbook publisher resources • Use sparingly • Remember your first attempts will be difficult, but it will get easier • ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP PLAN!!!
