Friedland is a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago, where he concentrates his practice on financial and operational restructurings, workouts, chapter 11 reorganization and representing buyers and sellers of distressed assets. Mr. Friedland has litigated and negotiated preference, fraudulent conveyance, equitable subordination, substantive consolidation and confirmation issues to successful conclusion. He is on the advisory board of the ABI Law Review, a contributing editor to the ABI Journal’s “Chapter 11-’101’” column, a widely published author and a frequent speaker. He has been a regular contributor to ABI’s “Nuts and Bolts” program on bankruptcy fundamentals. He is also a contributor to Norton Bankruptcy Law and Practice and Wiley Bankruptcy Law Update. Mr. Friedland was named an “Illinois Super Lawyer” by Chicago Magazine and is a member of ABI and the New Jersey, Arizona, New York and Illinois State Bar Associations. Kannel is a member at Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo P.C. in Boston and practices in its bankruptcy, restructuring and commercial law sections. He practices primarily in the areas of commercial law, workouts and corporate reorganization and has represented various institutional lenders, indenture trustees, bondholders, other creditors, debtors and trustees in all manner of insolvency proceedings in courts throughout the United States. His practice also includes addressing bankruptcy and documentation issues in securitizations, receivable sales, bond transactions and structured financings generally. Mr. Kannel is a member of the Banking and Commercial Law Section of the American Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association and is a former chair of the Bankruptcy Law Section of the Boston Bar Association. He frequently lectures and writes on insolvency issues in front of these groups and numerous other bar, trade and industry groups including the National Federation of Municipal Analysts and the Association of Insolvency Accountants. He is a co-editor of the newly published, second edition of ABI’s Health Care Insolvency Manual and is a co-chair of ABI’s Health Care Committee. He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. Peiffer is a shareholder of Day Rettig Peiffer PC in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where his practice is focused primarily on bankruptcy and debt restructuring. He has represented numerous farmers and creditors in chapter 12 bankruptcies, and in 1999 he testified before the House Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law Hearing on H.R. 833 Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1999—which included the language changing the treatment of tax claims resulting from the sale of assets used in the family farmer’s farming operation that is part of the chapter 12 provisions of the 2005 amendments. He also testified before the Bankruptcy Review Commission regarding the problems involved with confirming chapter 12 plans that require liquidation of low tax basis assets and the resulting priority income taxes. An ABI member since 1988, Mr. Peiffer is certified in business bankruptcy by the American Board of Certification. He is a member of the ABA and the Iowa State Bar Association. He served on the Specialization Committee of the Iowa State Bar Association from 1992-2002. Mr. Shapiro is listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America and appears nationwide in corporate bankruptcy matters and workouts representing troubled companies, financial institutions, creditors' committees, trustees and asset purchasers. Mr. Shapiro has testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on bankruptcy law and advised members of Congress on the health care provisions contained in the new law. He is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and has also served as trustee and examiner in business bankruptcy cases. An ABI member since 1983, Mr. Shapiro is a past chairman of the board, past president and executive committee member of ABI. He currently serves on the board of INSOL International and has served as chair of the Chicago Bar Association's Bankruptcy and Reorganization Committee.
