  4. FAFSA-Free Application for Financial Aid • 96% of students apply electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov • List up to 10 schools on the FAFSA • SAR-Student Aid Report received within 3 days. Students sent via email link. • Additional schools may be sent information: provide DRN (Data Release Number) on right hand corner of SAR • Students can electronically change data and schools on the SAR at any time.

  5. ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL AID FORMS • Ask what forms the institution requires, in addition to the FAFSA • What are the filing deadlines? May be filed earlier than the FAFSA Jan. 1. • Some private and public institutions require the CSS Financial Aid Profile and other scholarship or financial aid forms. CollegeBoard website has a list of schools on their website-www.collegeboard.com. • Two-step process for CSS Profile: • $5.00 online registration-www.collegeboard.com • $18.00 per college • Email help: help@cssprofile.org

CATEGORIES OF FINANCIAL AID • Scholarships – Check www.rbhs.org and the Bronco Center for updated lists and individual college scholarships. • Grants - State, federal (Pell and Supplemental), college, or other programs coordinated by the college. Need-based or merit-based; no repayment. • Loans – Borrowed money that must be paid back with interest. • Employment Opportunities – Campus-based programs (Federal Work Study), or private employment.

CAL GRANTS • CAL GRANT A – Low to middle income families: 3.0 minimum GPA • CAL GRANT B – Lower income families: 2.0 GPA • CAL GRANT C – Low to middle income families: No minimum GPA • CAL GRANT A/B –Community College Transfer 2.4 GPA COMPLETE FAFSA--APPLY BY MARCH 2-Tuition,fees,living expenses covered.

  9. FEDERAL GRANTS • Academic Competiveness Grant $750 CSU Eligible--second year $1300 • Pell Grant- $4,050 • Supplemental Educational Opportunity – School Determines Amount dependent on FAFSA-$100-$4,000-varies for institution.

  11. National SMART Grant • U.S. Citizens and eligible non-citizens • Federal Pell Grant recipient • Cumulative GPA 3.0 • Eligible major:Computer Science, Math,Engineering,Physical Science,Technology,Life Science, or Foreign Language • $100-$4,000-funding varies at institution

  12. So You Want to Be a Teacher? • Federal TeachGrants-Teach in a “high need” school/subject-$4,000 • Federal Loan Forgiveness-$5,000 in federal Stafford loan for five years low income school. Up to $17,500 for math,science, special ed. • Federal Perkins Loan Forgiveness-part or all-low income school, special ed.,subject related. • TeachforAmerica-Interest payment or $4,725 per year if you teach 2 years at a disadvantaged school.

LOANS • Federal Stafford – low interest 6%-6.8%; students pay back after graduation-6 month grace period. • Federal Perkins – low interest-5%; exceptional financial need based; students pay back after graduation- 9 month grace period. • Federal Plus – 8.5%-Parent’s assume responsibility.May align with student 6 month grace period. • Private – Contact lender or college. Institutions differ in available funds. • Federal Work Study-Apply with Financial Aid Forms. Job may be on or off campus.

NECESSARY DOCUMENTS • Social Security number, driver’s license number • 2008 W-2 Forms • 2008 Income Tax Returns – parent and student (estimate, if necessary) • Recent bank statements • Your Federal Student Aid PIN, and a parent’s PIN • An email address • Recent business or investment records • Alien registration number or permanent resident card if not a US Citizen

FIRST STEPS IN APPLYING • Be sure you have a Social Security number; males 18 and over must register for Selective Service at www.sss.gov • All students must fill out a FAFSA-Free Application for Student Aid. • NEW!! FAFSA 4Caster Worksheet Link at - www.fafsa.ed.gov Automatic PIN Registration-Allows electronic signature Automatic Transport to Jan. 1 FAFSA • OR -Get a PIN number at www.pin.ed.gov. Both parent and student need a pin. PIN received immediately. • Submit the FAFSAon the Web starting Jan. 1 - early submissions will be returned! March 2 is the due date for CAL Grants!
